Leaps and Bounds in Clean Energy !
Climate change is one of the most talked about topics currently world over. Plastic pollution, air pollution, greenhouse gases, melting caps of our poles; all have gotten the world leaders thinking ways to slow it down, if not reverse the cycle. There is some good news though. The shift in the electricity sector has effectively become unstoppable. Globally, more renewable energy capacity has been installed than new fossil fuel and nuclear capacity combined, for four years running. Some 181 GW of new renewables capacity was installed in 2018; it now makes up more than one-third of global installed power capacity. These are mainstream power sources, here to stay.
While the world bringing in reinforcements to address the clean energy needs, India too has spurring its way towards becoming a global epitome of renewable energy. India is the world's third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, behind China and the United States. To curb emissions, Indian officials say they want to increase the share of renewables in the nation's energy mix.
Renewables currently account for 22 percent of India's total installed capacity of about 357 GW. And the Indian government wants to have 175 GW of renewable-based installed power capacity by 2022, and raise it further to 500 GW, or 40 percent of total capacity, by 2030. A couple of weeks ago, Power Minister R K Singh said that as much as USD 70 billion (about Rs 5.2 lakh crore) has been invested in renewable energy across the country in the past seven years. This assumes significance in view of India's ambitious target of having 175 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2022.
According to the analytics firm British Business Energy, India ranked 3rd globally in terms of its renewable energy investments and plans in 2020.
