India is the second largest fish producer in the world, accounting to a whopping 6.3 percent of the global fish production. The Secretary of the Department of Fisheries – Rajni Sekhri Sibal said “Fisheries is a sun rise sector in India, considering the commercially viable global tuna market which stood at $11.38 billion in 2017, is projected to reach $13.75 billion by 2023”. Moreover, growing at the rate of seven percent, the fishery sector sustains around 14.5 million fishermen in the country. Aside this, major growth rates in marine fisheries, coastal/fresh-water aquaculture, and inland/cold water fisheries are further contributing to the food basket, health, economy, exports, employment and tourism facets of the country.
