  • Government simplifies approval system for coal and lignite exploration programs.
  • New process removes the need for clearance from the 2022 government panel.
  • Reform aims to boost efficiency, private participation, and sustainable mineral development.

The Centre has overhauled the approval process for coal and lignite exploration to make it faster, simpler, and more business-friendly. The Ministry of Coal announced that it has revised the existing system to support India’s rising energy needs and strengthen the country’s exploration capabilities.

Under the new mechanism, exploration programs and geological reports (GRs) prepared by accredited prospecting agencies no longer need approval from the government committee set up in 2022. Instead, the ministry will rely on reports created by Notified Accredited Prospecting Agencies (APAs) certified by QCI-NABET and peer-reviewed by another accredited agency.

The ministry said the simplified process is designed to promote quicker, more efficient, and technology-driven exploration of coal and lignite deposits. With energy demand continuing to grow, the government aims to ensure that exploration keeps pace with national requirements while maintaining high technical standards.

According to the ministry, the reforms also highlight the government’s confidence in private exploration agencies. By expanding the role of Private Accredited Prospecting Agencies, the Centre hopes to tap into their expertise, innovation, and advanced technologies. This shift is expected to improve transparency, support sustainable resource development, and strengthen the overall exploration ecosystem.

The coal ministry added that these changes are part of a broader push to streamline regulations, attract private sector participation, and improve India’s long-term energy preparedness.
