Dream11 Freezes Operation in Karnataka after FIR Filed Against Founders

Dream11, the fantasy gaming platform freezes its operation in Karnataka after being filed complaints against the violation of rules by newly implemented Karnataka Gaming Ban on Sunday.

The suspension of gaming platform happened after the Bengaluru Police filed a FIR on Saturday, against founders of Dream11, Harsh Jain and Bhavit Seth following a complaint that the Mumbai-based gaming start-up violated rules of the Karnataka Gaming Ban that newly implemented on October 5.

Annapoorneshwa Nagar Police in West Bengaluru registered the complaint and filed the FIR against the co-founders of the fantasy gaming platform.

The Start-up said, “However, following the recent media coverage, our Karnataka users have expressed deep concerns and anxiety on their safety and security. In order to allay our users’ concerns, we have decided to suspend operations in Karnataka”. “This decision is without prejudice to our rights and contentions under law”, it added.

Karnataka’s new rule, which was implemented on October 5, bans online fantasy games that are “games of chance” in future. It makes shutting down the online games, involves in money exchange and betting which is non-bailable offense.

Paytm First Games, Mobile Premier League (MPL), Games24X7 and others, joined by Dream11, also deactivated their platform for Karnataka users.

The move progresses at a time when the Indian Premier League (IPL) is at its peak and the T20 World Cup is expected to start by this month. These sports are determining for the fantasy gaming platform to engage the new users in competitive section.

Karnataka falls in top three states in India in terms of regular usage of online fantasy games. Dream11 is the largest player in cyberspace, valuing approximately $5 billion while MPL became a unicorn in last month.
