  • India and Sweden launch seven projects to speed up decarbonization in steel and cement.
  • Leading companies and top institutes to test hydrogen use, green cement, and AI-based solutions.
  • Initiative supports India’s push toward its 2070 net-zero target.

India and Sweden have jointly rolled out seven new projects aimed at reducing emissions in the steel and cement industries, two of the country’s toughest sectors to decarbonize. The initiative is part of India’s broader efforts to advance toward its 2070 net-zero goal while supporting rapid infrastructure growth.

The projects are backed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Swedish Energy Agency under the LeadIT industry transition partnership. They will begin with pre-pilot feasibility studies conducted in India.

Industry leaders including Tata Steel, JK Cement, Ambuja Cements, Jindal Steel, Prism Johnson, and Cemvision are teaming up with Swedish technology players such as Kanthal and Swerim. Together, they will explore solutions like using hydrogen in rotary kilns for cleaner steelmaking, recycling steel slag to manufacture low-carbon cement, and applying AI tools to cut emissions in cement production.

Top academic institutions including IIT Bombay, IIT-ISM Dhanbad, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Hyderabad, and Datta Meghe College of Engineering, will support the research and testing work.

Officials said these projects will help India accelerate the adoption of cleaner manufacturing technologies and strengthen collaboration between Indian companies and global innovators. With steel and cement being critical to India’s infrastructure push, decarbonizing these sectors is essential for long-term climate progress.
