Frontier Biscuit Factory: Manufacturing Scrumptious yet Nutritious Delicacies with Century - Long Mastery & Virtue
Pawan Kumar Sethi, Directors
As a child, every one of us has ‘invented’ the perfect version of munching on the moreish delicacy – biscuits. Maybe it’s just me! Today, we have the luxury of choosing a biscuit from a wide variety that tingles our taste buds. But when they came into existence eons ago in the form of Rusk (or stone bread as they were called) to satiate the carbohydrate needs of sailors & soldiers, biscuits had nothing but flour and water. They gradually evolved into a sponge cake that was aerated with eggs and dried-out in the oven again, thereby earned the name – biscuit which means ‘baked twice’ in French. Unsurprisingly, these crumbly delights relished by all age groups unanimously, eventually emerged into one of the iconic snacks.
Having a tight grip on the throne of ‘highest selling snack’, biscuits have been conquering more and more space in our diets in the form of finger food for toddlers, snack to welcome guests or to curb the appetite till the next meal. Now, imagine tasting this unanimously adored food hybridized with the perfect blend of Indian spices, which have enthralled a special place in the hearts of people from all around the world with their unique flavor and the nutritional attributes. Mastering this art is what has enabled Frontier Biscuit Factory Pvt. Ltd. to make someof the world’s most delicious biscuits and lead the chart in the niche eggless premium biscuits industry in India since 1921 with its path breaking innovations. Manifesting its innovative spirit to roll-out self-developed flavours in tandem with the evolving taste of its customers, is its strong portfolio boasting of more than 45 varieties of lip-smacking eggless premium biscuits that come in different types of packaging – a humungous range that no other company has been able to offer under one roof.

Ascertaining Quality & Hygiene
Hard-bent on amplifying its wattage to glow increasingly brighter, Frontier provides and produces the best quality products by using the best possible raw materials available in the market. Frontier has always been keen on obtaining certificates from departments like FSSAI, Labour, ESIC, Provident Fund and others on a regular basis. The company also attained ISO 22000 in 2010, which demanded the modificationof its factories (installation of more air-ducts in its units) and introduction of new inventory measuring systems. “For Frontier, compliance to regulatory norms is not just about ascertaining superior quality, but also plays a vital role in making the process more professional and standardized,” proclaims Rajan Sethi, Chief – Business Development.
Just a decade ago, the entire process of producing biscuits was manual at Frontier, be it mixing, baking or cutting. Albeit it currently utilizes mixers, grinders, and ovens at its units, cutting & shaping are still done manually. Since these are handmade products, Frontier vests utmost importance on periodically training its staff to maintain hygiene, besides frequently conducting training programs to its sales staff at the counter.

The company that today employs over 400 people across two manufacturing units at Delhi & Haryana, corporate office and warehouse in Delhi and 62 exclusive outlets in seven states and is recognized as a leading manufacturer of Eggless Premium Biscuits in the North Indian region was just a hole in a wall biscuit bakery shop that didn’t even had a name, when Mangal Sain laid its cornerstone in 1921. When he shifted the business to Delhi from Hoti Mardan (now in West Pakistan) in 1947 post partition with his 17-year-old son Munshi Ram Sethi, they merely had a couple of workers in a small production unit and barely knew six biscuit recipes. This was before 1970s, when its biscuits were not consumed widely. Back then, the batches were made from the raw materials provided by customers and Frontier was paid roughly 50 paise per kg for the labour of baking the biscuits.
The company was winning more and more hearts with a steadily increasing demand, until the mid-1970s. During that period, Frontier suffered turbulence, since the government’s pollution control measures banned all the bakeries from baking in their premises in the colonies. Moving its manufacturing unit to Lawrence Road Industrial Area took a marked toll on Frontier’s production and profits, which couldn’t rise above 10 percent for quite some time. These were dark days, when raw materials had to be procured from far away almost every day. Despite the hardships and trickling earnings, Munshi Ram Sethi was determined to push ahead with a strengthened resolve. He eventually managed to emerge above these challenges with his uncompromising eye for quality and innovation. He decided to

pursue the business model of selling Frontier’s goods exclusively from its own shops or Authorized Dealers (as opposed to selling them from a general store).

Encouraged by the steep uptick in demand, the company opened its second outlet in 1977-78. With the third generation – Pawan Kumar Sethi and Sanjeev Sethi (Directors), entering the picture, Frontier launched its first authorized dealer in 1995. Since then, Frontier has only experienced the winds of fortune, with its Directors and fourth-generation scion Rajan upholding its reputation as a respected brand, even amidst the burgeoning competition. When Frontier became a Private Limited Company in 1989, it had a turnover of Rs.40 lakh, which grew into Rs.36 crore in 2011 and currently stands at Rs.48 crore. “Frontier hasstrived to set new standards of quality in all of its operations by its competent and experienced managerial staff and dedicated work force,” remarks Pawan.
