The emergence of Semi conductors has helped immensely in the growth of advanced technology. Known as the heart of modern electronics, semiconductors have brought a whole new level of evolution in digital technology, and now with the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) picking up momentum, the next generation of interconnected devices would further increase the demand for intelligent computing, thereby creating sustainable demand for semiconductors.

India has a very fast-growing electronics system design manufacturing (ESDM) industry. The ₹76,000 crore PLI Incentive recently announced by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), is an emphatic statement of intent by the government to gain a foothold in the multi-billion-dollar global semiconductor market, alike the other Asia Pacific countries including China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan which are spearheading the Semiconductor manufacturing globally. While India is not far away, it needs to accelerate its production as well as the manufacturing of semiconductor chips to be in the list of global semiconductor suppliers.

The Mass Flow Controllers (MFCs) which precisely measure and control the flow of
gases and liquids play a vital role as a key component of manufacturing equipment in a wide range of industries from semiconductors and LCD panels to LEDs and solar cells. HORIBA Group, with a market share of ~60% (as of Dec 2021) is the world leader in the global mass flow controller market. The range of gas flow controllers includes two types of sensors, the pressure differential type and the thermal type, and various communication protocols: analog, digital, DeviceNet, PROFIBUS and EtherCAT to choose between the high-precision piezo valve or the more traditional solenoid valve to control your process gas. All-metal seals or Viton™ seals are available depending on specific gas or liquid compatibility requirements. Multi-gas (where the user can program the gas type) and multi-range (where the user can configure the flow range) are available for when one needs flexibility. These multigas, multi-range flow controllers also reduce the amount of inventory.

The Mass flow controller is also used in various sections of renewable energy production like Solar, H2 fuel, etc., and in research and testing laboratories. Samsung, Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are a few well-known global consumers of HORIBA MFC. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai, IIT Delhi, Jupiter Solar, Adani Solar, Sterlite etc., are a few organizations using HORIBA MFC for many years.

HORIBA MFCs also play a vital role in the manufacturing of the Lab Grown Diamond (LGD) to control the flow of carbon-rich gases such as methane, and either hydrogen or oxygen in the diamond industry. The Indian LGD industry growing at a pace of ~10.2% CAGR is already witnessing a spike in the demand for MFCs in this market.
