In the Indian economy, livestock plays a key role and provides 4.11% of GDP and 25.6% of total GDP in agriculture. Many farmers in India depend for their living on animal husbandry. Small and medium-sized farmers with average farm holdings of less than 4 hectares, for example, possess around 87.7 per cent of the country's cattle. It also provides jobs for around 8.8% of the Indians.
